3+ Years of Solar & EV Ecosystem:
The Real-World ROI

Based on real rooftop solar generation and daily EV usage via a fully automated data pipeline — not simulated projections.

The Problem

Can a home solar setup actually power an EV fleet reliably and economically? Most discussions around the "Solar + EV" ecosystem are highly theoretical, relying on manufacturer claims and idealized weather. I didn't want to guess. I wanted to measure it in the real world over years of actual use to prove the financial model.

The Setup & Pipeline

  • Solar System: 5.1 kW Rooftop Plant (Commissioned Jan 2023).
  • The Fleet: Tata Tiago.ev (Car) & Ather 450X (Scooter).
  • Time Range: 3+ Years of continuous telemetry.
  • The Pipeline: 100% automated zero-touch ingestion. Inverter reports are automatically emailed, parsed by a Google Apps Script, and pushed directly to this dashboard's GitHub repository.

🚗
Tiago.ev
₹7 saved / km vs petrol
km
Estimated Savings ₹0
Assumes petrol car at ~12 km/l, petrol ≈ ₹100/l (₹8.33/km ICE cost). EV charging cost ≈ ₹1.33/km. Net saving = ₹7/km.
Ather 450X
₹2.5 saved / km vs petrol scooter
km
Estimated Savings ₹0
Assumes petrol scooter at ~40 km/l, petrol ≈ ₹100/l (₹2.50/km ICE cost). Ather charging cost ≈ ₹0/km (solar-charged). Net saving = ₹2.5/km.

Key Insights

  • The Cost Collapse: By offsetting grid tariffs (₹12/kWh), the effective cost to drive dropped from an ICE equivalent of ~₹8.33/km to virtually zero.
  • Seasonal Resilience: While monsoon months see a drop in generation, the surplus generated during peak summer months completely subsidizes the deficit over an annualized cycle.
  • Automated Intelligence: Building a resilient data pipeline proves that tracking long-term financial ROI doesn't require manual spreadsheet upkeep—it can run entirely hands-free in the background.

Conclusion

The verdict is in the data. Combining a rooftop solar plant with an electric vehicle fleet isn't just environmentally viable—it is an aggressive financial advantage. The biggest lesson from 3+ years of telemetry? Consistency beats peak output. You don't need perfect sun every day to make the math work; you just need a system sized correctly for your baseline usage. Over time, the economic strength of this ecosystem becomes impossible to ignore.

Data & Assumptions

Solar savings are calculated at ₹12/kWh avoided grid tariff. EV savings are simplified flat-rate multipliers (₹7/km Tiago, ₹2.5/km Ather) and do not account for electricity tariff variation over time. All figures are estimates for personal ROI tracking, not financial advice. CapEx = ₹3,85,000 (5.1 kW system, fully installed, Jan 2023).
